Curriculum Subject

Art & Design

Art and Design is an important part of life at Longwill, providing pupils with opportunities to express themselves creatively, communicate ideas and explore the world around them.

Every Child is an Artist

We recognise that many Deaf children are highly visual learners, and our Art curriculum celebrates and develops these creative strengths.

Creativity

Pupils are encouraged to express their ideas, thoughts and feelings through a wide range of creative experiences.

Visual Learning

Our curriculum supports Deaf learners by using highly visual, practical and accessible approaches to learning.

Confidence

Children develop confidence, imagination and pride in their achievements as they create and share their work.

Creative Experiences

Through a wide range of artistic experiences, pupils learn about drawing, painting, sculpture, printing, textiles, digital art and mixed media.

Children are encouraged to experiment with materials, explore techniques and develop their own creative style.

Drawing • Painting • Sculpture • Printing • Textiles • Digital Art • Mixed Media

Artists, Designers and Culture

Pupils explore the work of a diverse range of artists, designers and craftspeople, developing an appreciation of different cultures, styles and artistic traditions.

This helps children understand how art can communicate ideas, tell stories and reflect experiences from different communities and periods of history.

Language and Communication

Art lessons provide valuable opportunities for language development and communication, enabling pupils to discuss their ideas, evaluate their work and share their creative processes.

Pupils use spoken language, British Sign Language (BSL), visual supports and written language to communicate their ideas and reflect on their work.

Spoken Language • BSL • Visual Supports • Written Language • Evaluation

Expression and Achievement

We encourage children to experiment, take risks and develop confidence in expressing their own thoughts and feelings through art.

Pupils are given opportunities to showcase and celebrate their work throughout the school community, helping them develop pride in their creativity and achievements.

Our Art and Design Aim

At Longwill, we believe that every child is an artist. Our curriculum nurtures creativity, imagination and self-expression whilst helping pupils develop technical skills and a lifelong appreciation of the arts.
