Pupil Leadership
School Council
At Longwill, we believe every child has the right to be heard, as outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). Our School Council gives pupils the opportunity to share their ideas, represent their classmates, and help make positive changes across the school.
School Council members are elected by their peers and meet regularly to discuss important issues, suggest improvements, and plan activities. The council helps pupils develop confidence, leadership skills, teamwork, and self-advocacy whilst ensuring that pupil voice remains at the heart of school life.
Ensuring every pupil has a voice, can influence change, and plays an active role in shaping school life.
As a Deaf school, we encourage pupils to communicate their views through British Sign Language (BSL), spoken language, and other forms of communication. We want all children to feel empowered to express their opinions and know that their ideas matter.
Through their involvement in the School Council, pupils gain valuable experience in decision-making, collaboration, and leadership whilst helping to create a positive and inclusive environment for everyone.
Rights Respecting Conference This term, the School Council is helping to organise our Rights Respecting Conference, working alongside staff and fellow pupils to promote the rights of children and celebrate the importance of respect, inclusion, equality, and participation. Through this work, pupils learn about the UNCRC and how children's rights help ensure that every child is safe, valued, and able to reach their full potential.
At Longwill, our School Council helps pupils become confident young leaders who understand their rights, respect the rights of others, and make a positive difference within their school and the wider community.
