Deaf Studies
Curriculum Subject

Deaf Studies

Deaf Studies is a unique and bespoke part of the curriculum at Longwill and sits at the heart of everything we do. As a Deaf-led curriculum, it celebrates Deaf identity, Deaf culture, Deaf history and the rich contributions that Deaf people have made to society both nationally and internationally.

Our Belief

We believe that every Deaf child deserves to see themselves reflected positively in their education and to develop a strong sense of pride in who they are.

Identity

Pupils are supported to develop a strong and positive Deaf identity, recognising that being Deaf is a strength and something to be celebrated.

Culture

Children learn about Deaf culture, Deaf Gain, British Sign Language, shared experiences, traditions, representation and belonging.

Self-Advocacy

Pupils learn to understand their rights, communicate their needs, request reasonable adjustments and ensure their voices are heard.

Celebrating Deaf Identity

At Longwill, we recognise that being Deaf is not something that needs to be fixed. Deafness is a culture, a language, a community and an identity.

Through our Deaf Studies curriculum, pupils learn about the history of Deaf people, the development of British Sign Language (BSL), significant moments in Deaf history and the achievements of Deaf role models who have challenged barriers and changed perceptions around the world.

Deafness is a culture, a language, a community and an identity.

We want our pupils to understand that being Deaf is a strength and that they are part of a rich and vibrant community with its own language, traditions, values and shared experiences.

Confidence, Rights & Voice

Our curriculum empowers children to understand their rights, advocate for themselves and develop the confidence to navigate both Deaf and hearing worlds.

Pupils learn how to communicate their needs effectively, make informed choices and challenge barriers they may face.

We want pupils to become confident communicators who know their rights and can advocate for themselves.

Self-advocacy is a fundamental part of our curriculum, enabling children to explain their preferred communication methods, request reasonable adjustments and ensure their voices are heard.

Culture, Community & Belonging

Pupils explore Deaf culture, Deaf Gain, accessibility, communication, equality and inclusion whilst developing a deep understanding of the strengths and unique perspectives that come with being Deaf.

They learn about the importance of representation, belonging and community, as well as the role they can play in shaping a more accessible and inclusive society.

British Sign Language is celebrated throughout school life and is recognised as a vital part of our community. Pupils learn that Deaf people have a rich cultural heritage and a vibrant global community, and that their language and experiences are something to be valued and celebrated.

Our Vision for Deaf Studies

We want our children to leave Longwill knowing that they belong to something bigger than themselves. We aim to develop confident, resilient, ambitious and proud Deaf young people who understand their identity, celebrate their culture and have high aspirations for their future.

At Longwill, Deaf Studies is more than a subject — it is the foundation of our school community. Our vision is for every child to grow into a successful, confident and happy Deaf adult who is proud of their language, proud of their culture and proud to be Deaf.
