English

At Longwill, our English curriculum is designed to meet the unique needs of Deaf learners while ensuring full coverage of the National Curriculum.

Language, Communication and Literacy

We support pupils to become confident readers, writers and communicators through a highly visual and accessible approach to learning.

Reading

Reading materials are carefully matched to individual needs using a range of schemes including Bug Club, Engage Literacy and PM Books.

Writing

English learning is linked to Maestro curriculum topics, providing meaningful and engaging contexts for reading and writing.

Communication

We use highly visual approaches that support language development, understanding and confidence in communication.

Specialist Teaching Approaches

We use Shape Coding to support children's understanding of sentence structure and grammar, helping pupils develop their writing skills and understanding of language.

Visual Phonics is used to develop blending and segmenting skills when reading unfamiliar words, providing an accessible approach that supports Deaf learners.

Shape Coding • Visual Phonics • Talk for Writing

We are also introducing Talk for Writing, a highly visual approach that supports Deaf children in developing their communication and writing skills.

Supporting Every Learner

Our English curriculum is carefully adapted to meet the individual needs of pupils whilst maintaining high expectations and ambitious outcomes.

Through engaging texts, structured teaching approaches and personalised support, children develop the literacy skills they need to access the wider curriculum and communicate confidently.

Assessment & Progress

Children participate in national assessments, including the Phonics Screening Check and Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 SATs.

Teaching, intervention and support are carefully tailored to ensure every child is able to make progress and achieve their full potential.

Our English Aim

We aim to develop confident readers, skilled writers and effective communicators who enjoy language, understand its power and have the literacy skills needed to succeed throughout their education and beyond.
