Geography

Geography is taught through our termly topics at Longwill, allowing pupils to develop their geographical knowledge and skills through a cross-curricular approach that makes learning meaningful and connected.

Exploring Our World

We inspire curiosity about the world around us, helping pupils understand places, people, environments and the connections between them.

World Knowledge

Pupils learn about a wide range of geographical features, places, environments and cultures from around the world.

Fieldwork

Children take part in practical investigations, local area studies and outdoor learning experiences.

Technology

Pupils use digital mapping tools and technology to develop important geographical and navigational skills.

Learning Across the Curriculum

Geography is taught through our termly topics, allowing children to make meaningful connections between subjects and apply their learning across the curriculum.

Pupils may use their geographical knowledge to support their writing in English, develop their understanding of coordinates and directions in Mathematics, or carry out investigations linked to Science.

Enquiry and Investigation

A key focus of Geography at Longwill is the development of enquiry and investigation skills. Pupils are encouraged to ask questions, gather information, analyse findings and draw conclusions about the world around them.

To support this learning, children use a variety of resources including atlases, maps, globes, aerial photographs and compasses to develop essential geographical and navigational skills.

Real-World Geography

We provide regular opportunities for practical learning through fieldwork and outdoor investigations, including local area studies and weather observations.

Technology also plays an important role in our Geography curriculum. Pupils learn how to use digital mapping tools, such as Google Maps, to explore locations, plan routes and develop skills that will support their independence and everyday lives in the future.

Our Geography Aim

At Longwill, we aim to inspire a lifelong interest in Geography by helping pupils understand, appreciate and engage with the diverse and ever-changing world around them. Through exploration, investigation and real-world learning, children develop the knowledge and skills needed to become informed and active citizens.
