Curriculum Subject

Mathematics

Mathematics is a core subject at Longwill and is taught daily throughout the school. We follow the White Rose Maths scheme as a framework, with teaching and learning carefully adapted and personalised to meet the individual needs of each pupil.

Building Mathematical Confidence

We believe every child can succeed in mathematics through high-quality teaching, practical learning experiences and a secure understanding of key concepts.

Daily Mathematics

Mathematics is taught every day, ensuring pupils develop strong foundations and confidence in their mathematical understanding.

White Rose Maths

We use White Rose Maths as a framework, adapting learning to meet the individual needs and learning profiles of our pupils.

Practical Learning

Learning is designed to be meaningful and engaging, helping pupils understand how mathematics applies to everyday life.

The CPA Approach

At Longwill, we believe it is essential for children to develop a secure and embedded understanding of mathematical concepts.

To support this, we use a Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract (CPA) approach, enabling pupils to explore and solve problems using practical resources and visual representations before moving on to abstract methods and formal calculations.

Concrete → Pictorial → Abstract

This approach helps pupils develop deep understanding and confidence before progressing to more complex mathematical learning.

Securing Understanding

Where appropriate, we follow the National Curriculum, ensuring that pupils have a strong grasp of fundamental concepts and skills before moving on to more advanced learning.

We recognise that every child learns at their own pace and therefore place a strong emphasis on securing understanding rather than simply moving through content.

Mathematics for Life

A significant aspect of our mathematics curriculum focuses on developing the practical skills children need for everyday life.

Telling the Time • Reading Timetables • Using Money • Measuring • Solving Real-World Problems

By making learning meaningful and relevant, we help pupils understand the value and importance of mathematics beyond the classroom and prepare them for future independence.

Our Mathematics Aim

At Longwill, we are committed to fostering confidence, resilience and a love of mathematics, equipping our pupils with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills they need to become independent learners and successful members of their communities.
