Science

Science is taught through a combination of discrete lessons and cross-curricular learning opportunities at Longwill. Our curriculum develops pupils' curiosity about the world whilst providing rich opportunities for language development, communication and enquiry-based learning.

Curiosity, Discovery and Understanding

We believe Science plays a vital role in helping Deaf children make sense of their environment and develop the skills they need to become independent learners.

Investigation

Pupils ask questions, make predictions, test ideas and draw conclusions through practical scientific enquiry.

Practical Learning

Hands-on experiences help children explore scientific concepts directly and develop a deeper understanding.

Communication

Scientific vocabulary is taught explicitly using spoken language, BSL, visual supports and practical demonstrations.

Learning Through Experience

At Longwill, we recognise that many Deaf children may have gaps in incidental learning experiences due to reduced access to everyday conversations and environmental information.

Our Science curriculum therefore places a strong emphasis on providing hands-on, practical experiences that allow pupils to explore scientific concepts directly through investigations, experiments, observations and discussion.

Building Scientific Knowledge

We follow the National Curriculum where appropriate, adapting content and teaching approaches to meet the individual needs of our pupils.

Learning is carefully sequenced to build upon prior knowledge and develop a secure understanding of key scientific concepts.

Plants • Animals • Materials • Forces • Light • Sound • Electricity • The Human Body

Pupils are encouraged to think critically, solve problems and make links between their learning and the world around them.

Language and Communication

Scientific vocabulary is explicitly taught through a language-rich approach, incorporating spoken language, British Sign Language (BSL), visual supports and practical demonstrations.

This approach ensures concepts are fully understood while helping pupils develop both their scientific knowledge and their communication skills.

Real-World Science

Practical investigation is at the heart of Science at Longwill. Wherever possible, learning is brought to life through outdoor learning opportunities, educational visits and real-world experiences.

These experiences enable pupils to observe, question and explore scientific phenomena first-hand, making learning meaningful and memorable.

Our Science Aim

At Longwill, we aim to inspire a lifelong interest in Science by nurturing children's natural curiosity and equipping them with the knowledge, language and investigative skills needed to understand and engage with the world around them.
